Financial Planning Fridays #37: DJIA 351,000

Because many retirements Presilium plans last at least 30 years, portfolios may need to provide both income and growth across that span. This episode uses a long-range, hypothetical Dow Jones illustration to explain the concept of long-term compounding, emphasizing that decades-long time horizons can call for staying invested rather than reacting to short-term moves. Past performance does not guarantee future results; this is educational, not investment advice.

Key takeaways

  • Most retirement plans must fund 30 or more years of income and growth.
  • Long time horizons make the power of compounding the dominant driver of outcomes.
  • Over multi-decade periods, the market has historically trended substantially higher.
  • Long-range index projections illustrate growth potential but are not guarantees.
  • A 30-year retirement still needs growth assets, not just safety.

At Presilium we believe we are preparing for the Dow Jones Industrial Average to reach 350,000- about 320,000 points higher from where we are today. Or around a 920% gain. Most of the retirements that we plan for our clients are at least 30 years long. Consequently, we need to ensure that your investments provide the income and growth that you will need for at least that long. It is so important that we focus on your long-term goals and don’t get caught up in the day to day volatility that will have almost no impact on your long-term returns. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a figure that is reported every day in news programs and articles around the world. Today it is around 34,000. Twenty years ago it was around 10,000. We thought it would be interesting to see what the Dow Jones Average will be in 30 years from today if it had the exact same annual returns as the last 30 years. Here is what we found: The Dow grows to just over 351,000. Yes, we double checked- 351,000. And we think that the world will improve at an even faster pace than the past 30 years and that we will overshoot 351,000 by quite a bit. At Presilium, we continue to remain focused on reaching our clients long-term goals in the most effective way possible. We are looking forward to Dow 351,000 and beyond.
