Key Lessons From 25 Years as an Advisor

On the 25th anniversary of his career as an advisor, Jerry Davidse reflects on lessons from the tech bubble, the financial crisis, COVID, and other periods of uncertainty. He explains that the greatest risk is usually the emotional decisions people make during a crisis, and credits patience, discipline, and long-term perspective for the outcomes families see over time.

Key takeaways

  • Across 25 years and more than 25,000 client meetings, financial planning is described as being about people, not just money.
  • Presilium has guided clients through the tech bubble, the global financial crisis, COVID, and other periods of market uncertainty.
  • The greatest risk during a crisis is often described as the emotional decisions people make in response to it, rather than the crisis itself.
  • Families who do best over the long term tend to have a thoughtful plan, stay disciplined, and keep a long-term perspective rather than chasing predictions.

Hi friends. 25 years ago today, I began my career as a financial advisor with one simple goal: to help people make better financial decisions and consequently create better outcomes for them and their families. Since then, I've had the privilege of working with incredible clients and hosting more than 25,000 meetings.

And through all of those conversations and experiences, I've learned something very important. Financial planning and investing are not really about money. They're about people. They're about helping families feel confident during uncertain times, helping people stay disciplined when emotions and headlines are telling them to do the opposite.

Over the past 25 years, we've navigated a tremendous amount of uncertainty together: the tech bubble, the global financial crisis, COVID, and countless other crises along the way. And during every one of those moments, it felt like the uncertainty would last forever. But every single time, the markets recovered. And each experience strengthened the relationships we have with our clients because we successfully navigated those storms together.

What I've seen time and time again is that the greatest risk is often not the crisis itself. It's the emotional decisions people make during those crises. The families who tend to do best over the long term are usually not the ones chasing predictions or trying to outsmart the market. They're the ones who have a thoughtful plan, stay disciplined, and keep a long-term perspective. That perspective only comes through experience.

And I feel incredibly grateful for the experiences, lessons, and relationships this profession has given me. I love our clients. There is no greater responsibility than helping families make decisions that impact their future, and the trust our clients place in us means everything to me. I also believe the Presilium team we have today is the best group of people I've ever worked with in this industry. Talented people, caring people, disciplined people, people who deeply care about our clients and about each other. That gives me tremendous optimism about the future.

And while I've learned so much during these first 25 years, and have been fortunate enough to receive dozens of industry awards, what excites me most is that I feel I'm just getting started. I'm more energized than ever about the next 25 years ahead, because while technology changes, markets change, and headlines change, the principles that matter most remain the same: have a plan, stay disciplined, think long term, and never underestimate the power of patience and optimism. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives. I love working with you, and I look forward to talking with you next Friday morning.
