Why You Need a Financial Plan

A financial plan gives structure to decisions about net worth, investment risk, and long-term goals, much like directions for a complicated project. This video walks through the four components Presilium builds into every client plan: an updated net worth statement, the right investment mix, goal-probability analysis using historical data, and year-by-year projections through retirement.

Key takeaways

  • A financial plan provides a clearer path to long-term goals, similar to using directions or GPS for a complex project.
  • An up-to-date family net worth statement is the starting point for building a financial plan.
  • The right investment mix is a central driver of both expected returns and portfolio risk.
  • Modeling goals against historical data and projecting finances year by year helps clients make informed decisions about retirement and taxes.

Hi friends, you and your family deserve an updated financial plan. Have you ever tried building something complicated without directions, or driven to a new destination without using GPS? It's harder, takes longer, and the results are usually not as good as they could be. The same applies to your financial future. Without a plan, it's difficult to reach your goals efficiently and confidently.

At Presilium, we believe that every successful financial journey starts with a comprehensive plan. It's the foundation we use to make the best decisions for our clients' futures. Please let me show you the four key components we include in every financial plan.

First, your net worth. Having an up-to-date family balance sheet is critical. It gives you a clear picture of where you stand today, because you can't chart a path forward without knowing your starting point. Second, your investment mix. This is the driving force behind your returns and determines the level of risk you're taking, so getting this balance right is essential for your long-term success.

Next, we calculate the probability of achieving each of your goals using historical market data. We determine your chances of success so you can make informed, confident decisions. Finally, we review year by year how this will look from today until the end of your retirement. This is also a great place to model out different scenarios: what would this look like if you spent more money in retirement, how much can you save in taxes by converting your pre-tax IRA or 401(k) to a Roth IRA, should you make your investments more or less aggressive. These are the questions that are all best answered after starting with the financial plan.

We are now updating all of our clients' financial plans for the start of 2025. If you know someone who could benefit from a financial plan, please have them reach out to us. We would love to talk with them. Thank you, and I look forward to talking with you next Friday morning.
