What Can a Financial Plan Do for You and Your Family?
Cullen Martin explains what a comprehensive financial plan is, and just as importantly, what it is not: not a spending log, a market-timing strategy, or a static document. He describes it instead as an evolving framework that connects your income, savings, and goals, from retiring early to funding a child's education, into a road map that changes as your life does.

Key takeaways
- A financial plan is not a forensic spending log, a market-beating strategy, or a set-it-and-forget-it document.
- A financial plan combines hard data, like income and savings, with softer goals such as retiring earlier or funding a child's education.
- The plan translates goals into specific strategies and decisions rather than just listing numbers.
- A financial plan is meant to evolve as your life and priorities change, functioning as an ongoing road map rather than a one-time exercise.
Hello everyone and thank you for joining me today. I wanted to change things up just a little bit. While the wonderful Presilium clients we have the privilege to serve are not just aware of what a financial plan is but also the importance of one, not everyone is. So, I wanted to take a few minutes to explain.
First, let's start with what a financial plan is not. It's not a forensic accounting of everything you're spending on. It's not a complex investment strategy that attempts to beat the market. And it is most definitely not a set it and forget it document.
A financial plan is a living, breathing framework that not only looks at all of the hard data like your income, your savings, your 401(k) balance, but also the softer side as well, your goals. The ones you may dream of late at night or discuss over drinks or a meal with a loved one, or those goals you may be too afraid to admit you have for fear of learning whether or not they're possible.
A financial plan outlines your goals and then allows you to shift them into strategies and decisions needed to make them a reality, empowering you to achieve them. Retirement at 60 instead of 65. Yep, a financial plan can help with that. Putting your kids through college, financial plan can help with that, too. Buying a second home to create lifelong memories? Another great question to review within your financial plan.
By now, you're probably getting the hint. A financial plan helps to serve as a road map to getting to your goals. And it's a road map that evolves and changes over time as your life does.
So, if you've been wondering, can I? Should I? What if I? We'd love to learn more and help you create your own financial plan that addresses those goals and how we can partner together to confidently make them happen. Thanks for watching and until next time.
